Mount Longonot lies in the great rift valley 60 km from Nairobi. Its within a protected area, the Mt longonot Nationla Park. The main activity here is trekking up a 3 km trail to a crater, then a further 7 km around this volcanic rim. Its challenging but the sights and sounds of nature are truly memorable.

Its best visited as a stopover point to or from the world famous Masai Mara National Reserve.

Plenty of drinking water, snacks, walking gear and sun guard are highly recommended.

Other similar walking destinations with a natural atmosphere includes:

  • The Aberdares National Park.
  • Ol Donyo Sabuk National Park.
  • The Hell’s Gate National Park.
  • Mt Elgon National Park.
  • Saiwa Swamp National Park.
  • Mt Kenya Forest.
  • Kakamega Forest National Reserve.

The walking trails in these parks are generally safe and secure, however, they are inhabited by a small population of wild animals, and wildlife is always wild. We always take an armed wildlife ranger as our escort guide.

Among the animals likely to be seen are several antelope species including the bush buck, eland, impala, dikdik, duiker and the waterbuck. Warthogs can also be seen, baboons, syke’s monkeys, vervet monkeys and occasionally the African buffalo, giraffes. Cats are generally hard to find.

Many other private conservancies, national and game reserves organise cultural walks with local guides giving a good mix of culture and nature.
